The Literary Language of Nature: Classic Nature Poetry
with Winifred Hughes Spar
In this course, we will look back at the sources of ecopoetry in the now classic nature writing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was the Romantic poets—primarily Wordsworth, Coleridge, and John Clare—who transformed both the literary tradition and our ways of thinking about our human relationship to the natural environment. We will be reading some of the most beloved and enduring poetry of the last two centuries from the perspective of evolving ecological concerns.
The course will meet in person with a virtual option.
