Backyard Composting with Priscilla Ellen Hayes

Free Event!

This event will be virtual. Links will be sent to registrants before the event starts.

Composting is a simple way for people to improve soil health and control water in their own yards. Compost amended soil absorbs more stormwater, which will reduce the amount of polluted stormwater running into our local streams. Compost will also make your plants and the rest of your landscape healthier. Join The Watershed Institute and Priscilla Ellen Hayes, who runs an educational program in Robbinsville, for a conversation about home composting.

Ms. Hayes will explain how to compost vegetable and fruit waste from your kitchen as well as other types of organic waste, thereby diverting this waste from local landfills. She will share her favorite compost recipes, discuss how to choose or build your own composter, and address common composting challenges. Participants will have a chance to ask questions, and handouts for further reading will also be provided. If you have never composted, are thinking about it, or have some experience with composting, this workshop will be a great place to learn more.

Priscilla Hayes has been teaching composting since the 1990s, when she created educational programs for her Clean Communities and Recycling Coordinator educational program with Robbinsville. Her service with the New Jersey Conservation Partnership, and falling in love with soil health, deepened her understanding of the crucial role that composting plays in a variety of environmental problems, including dialing down climate change.

This year, we are launching our Watershed Wednesdays series of webinars on a wide variety of topics. We will explore the environmental laws that arose after the passage of the Clean Water Act, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. We will also learn about Urban Farms started in some communities to counteract the dearth of healthy food options available in some cities. Other webinars will delve into water contaminants, soil health, ecological landscaping, composting, and more.
