As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act, join The Watershed Institute’s Executive Director and Seth Siegel, author of Troubled Water: What's Wrong with What We Drink, for a conversation about the health of New Jersey’s waterways and the safety of the water that we drink.

The vast majority of the waterways in New Jersey do not yet meet the standards of the Clean Water Act and concerns about harmful chemicals in our drinking water are on the rise. Just recently state officials announced that dozens of New Jersey water systems that serve 500,000 residents exceeded new standards announced last year for PFAS, a family of chemicals linked to cancer.

Don’t miss this important program, which is part of our Watershed Wednesday series.

About Seth Siegel

Seth is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution for a Water-Starved World, which is now in print or production in more than 20 international editions representing more than 50 countries. His second book, Troubled Water: What's Wrong with What We Drink, presented an ambitious agenda for a fundamental rethinking of America’s drinking water system.

His essays on an array of issues have appeared in The New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and in leading publications in Europe and Asia.

Troubled Water: What's Wrong with What We Drink quickly became one of the most talked about – and controversial – books among water officials, engineers, public health experts, and the large number of everyday citizens concerned about the quality of their drinking water.

Troubled Water makes the startling – but true – statement that just because your drinking water meets all federal drinking water standards does not mean it is safe to drink. That is because the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the government agency responsible for assuring the quality of our drinking water, has failed to keep up with contaminants found in what comes out of our taps. With thousands of chemicals in commerce getting into drinking water, only a few dozen are regulated by the EPA. Even more shocking, with potentially grievous consequences, not a single new contaminant has been singled out for EPA regulation in nearly 25 years.

Along with this indictment of bipartisan government failure, Troubled Water lays out a plan for what needs to be done to get everyone water that is safe and affordable.

This year, we are launching our Watershed Wednesdays series of webinars on a wide variety of topics. We will explore the environmental laws that arose after the passage of the Clean Water Act, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. We will also learn about Urban Farms started in some communities to counteract the dearth of healthy food options available in some cities. Other webinars will delve into water contaminants, soil health, ecological landscaping, composting, and more.
