NJ Salt Watch: 2025-2026 Winter Registration
NJ Salt Watch empowers community scientists like you to learn more about the impacts of winter salting on freshwaters in your region. Since our program launched in 2020, we have collected more than 3,500 chloride measurements across the state. With your help, we can continue to explore the extent to which road salting affects freshwater salinization and how municipalities and other property managers can reduce their salt inputs to safeguard healthy waterbodies and safe drinking water.
When: Sample and measure chloride anytime from October to April
Make a plan to use up all of your test strips this season! Each site visit will take about 10 minutes.
Where: Any freshwater stream, river, lake, or pond in New Jersey
Return to the same approximate location(s) every time you sample! Our goal is to track how chloride levels change over time.
